Streetworks was an innovative competition organised by the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects and called for entrants to “reimagine spaces in the City of Sydney as dynamic, innovative and sustainable temporary public places.”
Our entry “BOAT PLANTS” consisted of a light framed and textured ‘boat’ designed to sit prominently on the forecourt of Market City in Ultimo – a multicultural place with the vibrant identity of Paddy’s Market and Chinatown at its heart.
The boat expresses issues around the export of some of our key native plant species to other parts of the world including:
- the Northern Hemisphere, where they have contributed to wildfires in the US
- Hawaii & Florida where they have reduced biodiversity in the tropics
- Portugal where they have created monocultures, and
- California where they have replaced local oak woodlands.
The installation taps into the need for global cultural networks to promote information exchange and cultural understanding.
